Much like the jackalope, wolpertinger , or chimera, the Questing Beast is one of those strange beasts of legend that combine the parts of other animals. In this case, it has the head of a serpent (dragon or snake), the body of a leopard, the hindquarters of a lion and the feet of a deer. It appears in Arthurian legend where it is hunted by King Pellinore, one of the Knights of the Round Table, depicted here with one of his hounds.
The beast is said to be the offspring of a princess and the devil. The woman, who lusted after her brother, offered herself to the devil, and, in exchange, the devil was supposed to make her brother fall in love with her. Instead, he tricked her into accusing her brother of rape. Enraged her father had the boy torn to shreds by his dogs. With his dying words, he foretold of the beasts birth.
