You hear alot about free range chickens and cattle, but you rarely hear about free range pig farming. It is apparently practiced though.

For the latest entry in my pig art series, I've depicted a couple of pigs foraging around an old retaining wall. I was also in the mood for a springtime artwork, so I set the scene in a bright green field scattered with a few flowers. The calico cat was added for a bit of decoration.

Note: this image uses purchased products. The pigs and cat were posed using Poser 6 and was then impported into Vue 9 where the rest of the scene was constructed. Final rendering was done in vue and took about 12 hours on an Intel I5 2.8GHz with 8 GB of RAM. Post production was done in GIMP.

Thanks!  It is primarily a 3d render, but with some painted details.  If you have some time,  I have some youtube videos to show people how I make art:  www.youtube.com/user/danielesk…

Now I can appreciate digital art with original images! That's cool how you posed them yourself, so much better than your typical copy and paste digital (crap) collage. Cheers! :iconahoyplz:

More piggiesssss!!! What a lovely springtime scene... The cat would argue about being decoration... I'm sure she thinks she is the star of the image.. :giggle:

Free range pigs is definitely practiced. When I was intern working for NRCS, I did a lot of research on pigs, I know more about pig habits than I care to ever learn in a life time (this also includes chicken habits too). We had a farmer who was having difficulty keeping his pigs alive, especially through the winter (I was in Alaska then). We managed to convince him to use the farmland that he had that he wasn't farming, and get those pigs roaming. It helped out so much for the poor things!

Love this picture and especially with the kitty  Did you do the fur for the cat in vue as well, like this pigs? Or was that postwork?

Thanks!

The bulk of the calico coat was a texture from one of the Daz Mil Cat packages. I fixed up all the outlines of the cat though break up those hard edges.

Aww, how cute are these guys!! Love the expression on the guy in the foreground! hehe He's all happy and content and fuzzy looking. Yea, a calico kitty! He looks so cute sunning himself on the rock ledge. I like the springtime feel to this one with the tiny little flowers and pretty blue sky. I especially love the POV, it gives the image such a nice feeling of depth! What an awesome life these guys lead, all relaxed and no worries! Excellent render Daniel! weeeee! :iconcat-glompplz:

Nice. The pigs aren't usually that free range, though. Round Lincolnshire they're kept one or two at a time in grassed pens in the fields, each pen having a small pighouse like an open-ended nissen hut so they can shelter in bad weather and have room to trot around in the pen.

Far nicer for them than the heavily constricted indoor pens that many intensive operations use. And happy pigs ake better sausages. :D

LOL...
The term 'wild' comes to mind.

Four of us spent a full day on a friend's 'small' 800 acre ranch with assault rifles getting rid of the feral pigs. They were javelinas, either, but full sized domestic hogs gone wild.
